Note: We heartily endorse the work of this panel. That said, as we have pointed out, Abraham Lincoln was not the hero or saint that we have been led to believe – quite the reverse – and that invoking Lincoln in speeches leads to no good.
We also must point out that the “three-fifths rule” was not in itself a statement that a chattel slave (who had no vote) was somehow less than human. Instead, its purpose was to limit the political power of the States that had a large number of slaves, by apportioning them fewer US representatives and fewer presidential electors.
