Well, it turns out that Rep. West was right, of course. The books were indeed cooked, and here’s the recipe: The BLS jobless claims number omitted California, “the most populous and economically depressed state in the country.” Before issuing their report, the BLS knew exactly what figures they had – and what figures they didn’t have. They knew very well that issuing the report without California data would paint an artificially rosy picture of the US job situation.
