On May 30, Serbian Weekly (Semanario Serbio) is organizing a Conference in Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, entitled Srebrenica – Ciudad sin Dios (“Srebrenica – Godless city ” ), dedicated entirely to a reappraisal of the globally ‘known’ facts about what happened in Srebrenica that were spread by the media worldwide, i.e. as “the worst massacre in Europe after World War II”. There will be a presentation of the book with the same title, (Srebrenica – Ciudad sin Dios) copies of which will be distributed free of charge to the attendees.

The participants are:

Michel Collon, Belgian writer and journalist (Michel Collon is the author of several books on the civil wars in the ex-Yugoslavia http://www.michelcollon.info/);

Eduardo Luis Aguirre, professor of Criminal law and Criminology and Investigator at the Universtity of Pampa, Argentina (http://www.campusapp.com.ar/presentacion/aguirre.html) and

Stephen Karganovich, American lawyer of Serbian origin, president of NGO “Srebrenica Historical Project” the Hague, Holland (http://www.srebrenica-project.com/).

The Conference is organized and hosted by Alexander Vuksanovich, editor of Semanario Serbio.

The goal of this Conference is not to reduce the number of Muslim victims in Srebrenica, but rather to try to encourage a critical distancing from politics and propaganda on this issue through the creation of an impartial contextual framework (to the extent possible) of the Srebrenica tragedy, that could serve as a real contribution to future peace, reconciliation and coexistence between the Serbs and the Bosnian Muslims.

In a clear violation of laws and customs of war, in July, 1995 in Srebrenica hundreds of Muslim prisoners were shot. It is natural that we condemn energetically this terrible massacre and thus express our solidarity with all the victims and their families, regardless of their nationality, religion or political ideology. We do not question the crime committed by a group of Serbs, but we will try to place it in a suitable historical, political and military context and thus add a fair legal and moral dimensions to it.

Besides the intention to stimulate a new debate on Srebrenica, where all the involved parties should participate in order to re-examine the circumstances that surrounded Srebrenica events in July of 1995, our goal is also to open the debate on the Serbian victims that were completely ignored even though they were not less numerous than the Muslim ones. Serbian villages surrounding the “protected and demilitarized” enclave of Srebrenica remain destroyed even today, almost 18 years after the tragic events – despite all the help, both at state level and international, given to the Srebrenica area.

In addition, the debate about the tragedy in Srebrenica has another dimension, and that is media. Claiming that their reporting supposedly helped bring peace to Bosnia, the media remains closed to any discordant voice, labeling it “genocide denial”, thus encouraging the radical segment of the Bosnian Muslim community who reject any mentioning of Srebrenica in terms less than ‘genocide’ and oppose any attention being given to Serb victims.

This is the framework in which we find ourselves today but we intend to expand it through this Conference and the book, hoping that the result of this effort will be to open the path for dialogue, reconciliation and coexistence between the Serbs and Bosnian Muslims.

“En el fondo, hay que reconocer que la historia no es selectiva, también es discriminatoria, toma de la vida lo que le interesa como material socialmente aceptado como histórico y desprecia el resto, precisamente donde tal vez se podría encontrar la verdadera explicación de los hechos, de las cosas, de la puta realidad.
