Stop Blog Censorship!

What do you mean, I can’t read Foehammer’s Anvil at Panera Bread?

Furious Smiley To our amazement and disgust, some of us have recently discovered that access to legitimate news and political sites – especially antijihadist sites, including Foehammer’s Anvil and Jihad Watch – is being blocked at many WiFi sites, workplaces, schools, government buildings, and other locations. This blacklisting is done automatically by content-control software, also known as “censorware.”

In Jenn Sierra’s article, Are Anti-Jihadist Sites Blocked where you Work, Study, or use Wi-Fi?, she mentioned that she was forbidden to access Foehammer’s Anvil from the supposedly “unlimited” WiFi at Panera Bread.

How do they set up this “censorware”?

Generally, an outside company is in charge of setting up the “censorware”. Depending on how it is set up, the censorware will block everything that falls into certain broad categories – not just blatant pornography, but anything having to do with sexuality, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, weapons, and violence. All too often, it also excludes anything “politically incorrect” that someone might conceivably classify as “bigotry” or “hate speech.” In other words, it locks out a huge range of sites offering news and views that are vital to effective participation in American society.

Unless someone knows how, and is willing, to loosen those restrictions, adult voters and taxpayers will find themselves treated like small children who cannot be trusted to make up their own minds. Forget about enjoying a broader range of political news and opinion than what the mainstream media conglomerates deign to provide. If you’re traveling, or if you are located where you have no other way to get to the Internet, you’re out of luck.

Political speech – especially “unpopular” political speech, or speech that makes some people uneasy – is exactly the type of speech that our Founders most wanted to protect. It’s also the type of speech that is most often shut down by the current wave of “political correctness”.

The coffeehouse has a venerable tradition as a place for reading and sharing newspapers, for socializing, and for exchanging news and ideas. Attempts to suppress this freedom of expression took the form of closing the coffeehouses or of prohibiting coffee itself, which proved largely futile. Nowadays, we rely on the Internet café to meet the same needs in a slightly different way. Too bad that the technology itself, which potentially lets us share information, exercise our freedoms, and express our creativity, is being misused to narrow the range of ideas that we are allowed to debate.

Where is this censorship going to end? There’s already a scarcity of printed news that addresses the issues of jihadism or the dangers to our freedom and our way of life posed by the growing Islamization of the U.S. And neither television news, nor our elective officials, even acknowledge that there might be a problem.

Food for thought: If we did have a newspaper that covered those topics, do you suppose someone would complain if we were to take it into a Panera Bread store to read while we’re eating? What would our response be if someone did raise a fuss?

If you’ve visited this blog before, or if you’ve already met 1389 elsewhere on the Web, you’ll know that I’ve never been afraid to “stir the pot” whenever it needs to be stirred. Nobody has attempted to shut down 1389 Blog, probably because it hasn’t built up a big enough audience yet. Even so, this issue affects all of us, bloggers and readers alike. Keep in mind that the blogs you like to read won’t be able to survive if it becomes too easy to stop their readers from seeing the blogs!

I just received this reply. Please feel free to use the link at http://cfssupport.sonicwall.com to request that Foehammer’s Anvil and other antijihadist sites not be blocked.

From “Pat” Fri, 24 Aug 2007 16:43:05 -0500

Thank you for contacting Panera Bread. We are happy to know that our
free wi-fi service is valuable to you, and we appreciate your comments.
As part of offering free wi-fi in our bakery-cafes nationwide, it is
important that we maintain the community tone and standards that Panera
Bread is known for. Panera Bread has partnered with Sonic Wall, a top
software company that maintains lists of categories and sites they
recommend for filtering. With millions of sites on the Web, sites
sometimes can be blocked in error. At the request of wi-fi users like
yourself, Sonic Wall reviews and reassesses them on an as-needed basis.

If you feel a site has been blocked in error, you may submit a URL
rating review request at http://cfssupport.sonicwall.com.

Please let us know if you have further questions or concerns. Again, we
thank you for visiting Panera Bread and using the free wi-fi service
that we are proud to provide.

Sincerely,
Pat

Thanks for your help to Foehammer. You are providing a service that is much needed in our little international community. I have contacted Panera Bread and I urge everyone to do so. We must stand together.

I am not sure how the following might apply in Foehammers case or another, but I pass along this site for consideration.

http://www.ic3.gov/faq/

I think the FBI may require provable economic damages, loss or injury resulting from fraud. I’m not sure whether the party(ies) in this situation are identifiable with any degree of certainty, but that might be the province of investigators. I don’t know whether damages incurred would include time and effort to repair or remedy the result occuring from the fraud.

It might be worth considering for a learning experience and perhaps for future practical usage, if not here, then in future applications.

G’night

Actually, the FBI will tell you that the IC3 site is for reporting crimes relating to the Internet, and that content-filtering companies are not committing crimes, as is explained in depth on my site, along with statutory and case law citations.

I’m reading with great interest. Thanks.

10 Rev. Jim Sutter September 18, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Hey, Foehammer, I’m still waiting for those FBI agents you claimed you sent after me, and the ‘Cease and Desist letters from multiple law firms.”

11 Lady Predator September 22, 2007 at 9:56 am

Sutter should be careful what he wishes for!

12 Foehammer October 1, 2007 at 4:54 pm

Yes, Jim. Don’t worry. I am extremely patient. I have verified beyond any doubt that you have never been affiliated with any Navy “counter-terror” outfit. A friend of mine IS an ex-SEAL. You have lied about medals, military service and a plethora of other nonsense.

You have no foundation to work your insanity and evil from any longer, Jim.

Nobody taught you never to tug the tiger’s tail either. That’s a shame.

My lawyers and I already decided that sending you any letters was pointless. If and when I make a legal move on you it will be much more than a simple letter. It will mean that I am 100% sure that I can see you tossed in jail and/or have you permanently banned from access to the Internet and/or computers.

You really SHOULD be careful what you wish for. Indeed.

Libeling me and attempting to disclose my personal information and thus intentionally endangering my safety and that of my friends, family and associates is just one of the many actions that will have repercussions for you in the future. Reckless and stupid. Arrogant and fraudulent. Your best defense will be insanity, and if a rubber-walled room is your residence, all the safer for society in general.

All in good time, “Reverend”, all in good time.

13 Rev. Jim Sutter October 2, 2007 at 6:49 am

So Foehammer, in other words, your attorney told you that you don’t have a case. The same thing that Google told you when you tried to get them to close my blog, the same thing that everyone else has told you.

Have you figured out yet that you’ve now been blocked by approximately 465 content filters and URL filters? If you think I control or influence that many companies, you’re even nuttier than you’ve already shown.

As to your claim about my time in the Navy, I’ll tell you the same thing I told LadyPredator. The only definitive evidence of time in service and time in rank is the DD214. Since you make the claim about “knowing beyond all doubt” about what I did in the service, then produce my DD214. LadyPredator admitted she couldn’t (after claiming she could – she got caught in yet another lie.)

As a final suggestion, you really could benefit from treatment for your paranoia.

14 Foehammer October 2, 2007 at 11:02 am

You may think whatever you like, Jim. You are obviously insane and projecting constantly. A prime example of this is your above statement. You are absolutely consumed with your own facade and bread crumb trail and a very accomplished stalking abilities and yet at the same time you have the audacity to call my knowledge of your M.O. to be some sort of paranoia. No, sir, you are the one who is the paranoid delusional, not I.

You are a liar. Your continuing lies and attempts to cloud the pliable minds around you probably work quite well on flocks of lambs at a church or a cult meeting, but you will not have any effect on me. You are over-matched, Jim, and jeopardizing your own future with every silly retort. Your DD214 is something I should be concerned with? If it even exists and is not yet more BS, then I thank you for giving me that information. I can assure you, I can find out anything I wish about you. Not only am I friends with at least one ex-SEAL, but I suppose I should tell you that my own father worked for an intelligence agency for the USA. Surprise!

Hmm…oh, yes, and before I forget, I also am long time friends with an Air Force colonel. Do I really need to get on the phone and drag more powers into this fight to make sure that you are held accountable, Jim? Do yourself a favor. Go away. Get quiet. Today.

If you do not, don’t say I never warned you. While others might make shake of fist and scuffle of foot jibes at you, when I become sufficiently annoyed to seek justice against you, you can bet your last dollar that I will get results. You have made the wrong enemy. It was bound to happen, Jim. You are far too carefree with your libel and your fascism because you believe yourself so well-insulated from those your attack.

No longer.

15 Rev. Jim Sutter October 2, 2007 at 12:49 pm

And yet, for all your imagined “friends in high places” your website is still blocked, it’s still listed as a racist and/or hate speech site, and none of your “friends” have advised you that your threats are actionable.

I feel like I’m in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.

16 Foehammer October 3, 2007 at 6:32 pm

You’re projecting again, Jim. Look in the mirror for a few minutes; perhaps that might help you see reality more clearly.

17 Lady Predator October 24, 2007 at 12:18 pm

Sutter is a hoot. He is under some delusion that when one requests verification of a person’s service records they send you a copy of their DD214. What a deluded fool he is.

It doesn’t really matter, Sutter is such a loser that he never left Great Lake Illinois during his entire eight month “Navy Career”, he never even got a duty assignment. He was never a Naval officer, he was just an E3 who couldn’t make it pass A school.

The man is a just a scum bag with just a high school diploma who is embarrassed that his life was nothing but a series of failures and felony arrests.
